Connect your AI assistant to Cognition

You can connect your own AI assistant — Claude, ChatGPT or any assistant that supports MCP connectors — to Cognition, then work with your notes, quizzes, deadlines and journal straight from the chat. Ask it to “quiz me on my Stats notes” or “what’s due this week?”

Your assistant signs in as you and sees only your own work. You choose what it may do, and you can see everything it did in Cognition.

Cognition’s server address

Every assistant connects to the same address:

https://mcp.evolving-cognition.com/mcp

Paste this address, not the address of Cognition’s sign-in page. Your assistant opens the sign-in page for you when you connect.

Part of Cognition Pro

The AI connector is part of Cognition Pro. On the free plan you can still connect, but when you ask your assistant to do something, it tells you to upgrade and nothing happens until you do. Once you’ve upgraded, just ask again — you don’t need to reconnect.

Claude on the web, desktop and mobile

  1. In Claude, open Customize › Connectors, choose +, then Add custom connector.
  2. For Name, type Cognition, and paste the server address above. You don’t need a client ID or secret.
  3. Choose Continue. Claude fills in how to sign in by itself (“Sign in now” and “Claude’s published identity”, both marked Detected) — leave them as they are.
  4. Choose Connect. Cognition’s sign-in and permission screen opens; choose Allow.

Once it’s connected on claude.ai, Cognition is there in Claude Desktop and the Claude mobile app too, on the same Claude account.

On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an Owner first adds Cognition under Organization settings › Connectors; then each member connects it for themselves.

ChatGPT

  1. Go to chatgpt.com/plugins and choose Add › Create custom MCP server.
  2. Give it a name (for example, Cognition), paste the server address under Connection › Server URL, and choose OAuth to sign in.
  3. Tick the acknowledgement and choose Create as a plugin.
  4. Choose Continue to Cognition. Cognition’s sign-in and permission screen opens; choose Allow.

ChatGPT refuses a name you’ve already used in your account — if it does, pick another. Once Cognition is listed in ChatGPT’s plugin directory, you’ll be able to connect it from there instead.

Claude Code

The Cognition plugin is the easiest way, and it includes a quiz-me skill that quizzes you one question at a time. In Claude Code, run:

/plugin marketplace add GiGaSoftwareDevelopment/cognition-ai
/plugin install cognition@cognition-ai

Restart Claude Code if it asks, then run /mcp, choose cognition and then Authenticate.

To connect without the plugin, run this, then /mcp:

claude mcp add --transport http cognition https://mcp.evolving-cognition.com/mcp

Your browser opens Cognition’s permission screen, which says “This is an app on your own device” — that’s Claude Code.

Other assistants

Give your assistant the server address and choose OAuth as the way to sign in. It must support MCP sign-in: an assistant that asks you for an API key or a client ID can’t connect to Cognition.

Signing in and choosing permissions

When you connect, your assistant opens Cognition’s permission screen. It names the app asking — claude.ai, chatgpt.com, or “an app on your own device” — and lists each thing it wants to do in plain words. Untick anything you don’t want it to do, then choose Allow.

The request is good for 10 minutes. After that the screen says it has expired, and you start again from your assistant. A connection keeps the permissions you approved it with.

When your assistant asks for more

Claude doesn’t ask to delete things when you first connect. The first time it deletes something, Claude shows “Allow additional access to continue”, and Cognition’s screen lists only the new permission. The same happens when Cognition adds a new permission later, and after you disconnect and connect again, which starts from the usual first set of permissions.

ChatGPT asks for every permission on its first screen, deleting included, and can’t add one later. If Cognition adds a permission, remove the app in ChatGPT and create it again.

Confirming changes

Your assistant never edits or deletes anything without you:

  • Claude asks you to Allow once before it goes ahead.
  • ChatGPT shows Cognition’s Confirm this change form.

A change to more than one item isn’t made in the chat. It waits in Cognition for you to approve or reject it. Undo is in Cognition too, not in the chat.

When Cognition adds new tools

Assistants remember the list of things Cognition can do. When Cognition adds something new, refresh that list:

  • Claude: Customize › Connectors › Cognition, open the ⋮ menu and choose Refresh tools list.
  • ChatGPT: Settings, open the Cognition app and choose Refresh tools.

Seeing what it did and disconnecting

Everything a connected assistant does is listed in Cognition under Settings › Connected AI. There you can approve or reject changes that are waiting for you, undo a single change for a limited time, or disconnect an assistant.

Disconnecting in Claude doesn’t end Cognition’s access. To end it, disconnect the assistant in Cognition.
